BLOOD DONATATION

A Blood Donation Camp was organized at Vishwakarma Institute of
Information Technology (VIIT), Kondhwa, Pune by NSS (National Service Scheme)-
VIIT in association with Jankalyan Raktapedhi, Pune and Acharya Anand Rushiji
Raktapedhi, Pune on 21st September 2011 in the college campus.
The camp, organized twice a year, was inaugurated by the Principal (VIIT),
Dr. Mrs. B. S. Karkare and Prof. S. M. Umrani. The students were aptly guided by
Dr. B. P. Dane (Program Officer, NSS-VIIT) and Prof. A. P. Kulkarni. The students,
staff (technical and non-technical) of all departments actively participated for this
noble cause.

Any adult fitting the weight and haemoglobin count criteria can be
perceived as an eligible blood donor. Donating blood helps in reducing its
shortage, which is faced by many medical institutions. It is safe and harmless. The
blood is made up by the body within 48 hours. All routine duties can then be
resumed after the donation without any hindrance. Post blood donation, the
donors were provided with bananas, biscuits and tea to speed up the blood
reformation process.
Along with the blood donation camp, NSS-VIIT has undertaken various
workshops and activities to propagate the awareness about the pros of blood
donation. This helps clear all the doubts, misconceptions, if any, faced by the
donors, regarding blood donation.

A software has been developed by the NSS volunteers in order to ease the
retrieval of donor information. It serves the purpose of providing information
with respect to the donor's blood type, branch, year etc. This database can be
timely referred to by any blood bank in order to reach out to patients in need.
At the end of the day, the total count of donors reached to
423. Reaching
this stupendous figure would not have been possible without the support of the
organizers and the efforts of the NSS volunteers. All in all, a day well spent for the
benefit of the society.
