ABOUT WORKSHOP DEPARTMENT:
Manufacturing practical from different Engineering work-trades like Welding, Fitting, Tin-Smithy, Plastic Injection Molding, Carpentry, Pattern Making, forming, Casting, Machining etc., are conducted in this department for the students of various disciplines. All the students of First year engineering (F.Y.B.Tech.) irrespective of their disciplines and students from Mechanical stream, (S.Y.B.Tech) onward perform their practical in this department.
Workshop department provides facilities like CNC turning centre, conventional Lathes, Universal Milling Machine, Radial drilling machine, Surface Grinding machine, Welding machines etc. Department conducts various machining demonstrations by which students get ample information on different materials in engineering practices with respect to their workability, formability and machinability with hand tools and power tools and to develop skills through hands on experience.
During Workshop Practical, students are given enough knowledge about the different machines, hand tools, measuring instruments and the different processes which are commonly used to give different shape and size to the work piece. Technical staff of workshop is helping the students throughout the year besides the academic work with great interest for preparing the working models, supporting devices for different technical and cultural events, project work etc.
The department is heavily involved in carrying out the manufacturing activities with the help of some sophisticated equipments such as lathe dynamometer, surface roughness tester, composite material impact testing machine, profilometer etc for the research activities as well as for the undergraduate and post graduate training for the students throughout the institute in every semester. With the assistance of quality technical staff, UG and PG students are able to carry out the fabrication work for their B.Tech, M.Tech. Project work as well as other models under technical activities such as BAJA, SUPRA,GO-CAR,ATV CAR, ROBOT and AVISHKAR,FIRODIA etc.
A machine shop is a facility with equipment and supplies of raw materials for machining, a process where parts are cut, fabricated, and finished to prepare them as a product for use. Machine shop is used in the creation of new parts, as well as repairs of existing equipment and parts. In the Machine shop, heavy equipment like Lathe machine (Conventional), Radial Drilling machine, Milling Machine and Grinding machine are installed. Students of FY (E & AS), SY, TY and BTech of Mechanical Engineering perform the turning, milling, drilling, grinding, threading, knurling, boring and reaming operations to perform the practical and gain hands on experience.
Carpentry is the process of shaping Timber using hand tools. Carpentry work mainly involves the joining together of wooden pieces and finishing the surfaces after shaping them. Carpentry shop has a dedicated wooden lathe machine for processing of timber wood. FY students perform the practical in a group of 4-5 students and create a carpentry job involving various joints.
Foundry is a factory which involves molding, melting metal, pouring liquid metal into a mold, then allowing it to solidify, and producing the casting. This is a unique primary metal processing method which must be imparted to the engineering students. The practical work enables the students to gain expertise and confidence in foundry activities.
WELDING SHOP is a part of building where material working involves the joining of two or more pieces of metal by applying heat, through various means, to produce a localized union through fusion across the interface.
A Tin Smithy is a place where blacksmiths do their work, heating, and shaping metal, especially to make tools. Smithy or Forging is the oldest shaping process used for producing small articles for which accuracy in size is not so important. The parts are shaped by heating them in an open fire or hearth by the blacksmith and shaping them through applying compressive forces using a hammer.
Fitting is the assembly of parts, after bringing the dimension or shape to the required size or form, in order to secure the necessary fit. The operations required for the same are usually carried out on a workbench, hence the work is done on the bench is called Fitting work. Benchwork and fitting play an important role in engineering. Although in today’s industries most of the work is done by automatic machines that produce jobs with good accuracy still it requires some hand operations called fitting operations. A fitting shop worker is called Fitter.
